Pair of Biancamano bamboo armchairs

The model of the pair of armchairs you see here, designed by Gio ‘Ponti & Lio Carminati, is called Biancamano. The name derives from the Italian liner, launched in 1925, the Conte Biancamano, which made her maiden voyage on the prestigious Genoa-New York route. About twenty years after the launch, the ship was refitted as a passenger ship. On this occasion some of the most important artists, architects and decorators of the time were called to collaborate. The main rooms were assigned to ten different designers, including the painters Massimo Campigli and Mario Sironi, the sculptor Marcello Mascherini and the enameller Paolo De Poli. Gio Ponti himself, in charge of the furnishings, wrote: “The Count Biancamano, through the parade of the rooms, is the expression of different temperaments: this gives variety to the ship”
