Umbrella stand by Ettore Sottsass for “Rinnovel”

Lev Tolstoj, Resurrezione, 1899

In an interview with DOMUS in 2004, Sottsass exposes concepts that can help understand even an apparently banal object such as this rare example of umbrella stand, made in 1955 for RINNOVEL.

” A designer should know that objects can become the tool of an existential ritual, and not just things that are looked at and used, perhaps casually

Drinking water in a greaseproof paper cup on the highway, and drinking it in a crystal glass are different gestures. In the first case, while drinking, you almost forget you exist, in the second case, for the weight, for the fragility, for the transparency, for the non-taste, you know you have an instrument in your hand that leads you to reflect on what in that moment you are living. You grasp these differences and ask yourself these problems only if you know life well, the lives, the ancient stories, the ghosts of the past and those of the future.

This… is Design. ”
