Vase Y31 by Ettore Sottsass

Potremmo dire che un vaso è ben altro che un vaso! è intorno a un vaso che si costruisce la nuova casa e la nuova architettura. Chi disegna vasi, fonda un pensiero che entra in casa”

Andrea Branzi, Vasi comunicanti, 1990

The ceramic objects made by Ettore Sottsass have archetypal shapes and evoke cities or post-industrial spaces. Often, as in the case of this vase, they have names full of mystery and magic. By designing evocative objects, which connect to archaic or imaginary archetypes, Sottsass in fact manages to express his poetics, his desires, his thoughts, in a continuous dialogue between past and present.

This ductile and archaic material, which, as in an alchemical process, passes from earth to water, from air to fire, and is charged with meanings and sacredness, becomes one of his favorite materials.

The Y 31 vase, made around 1990, is part of the Yantra series which includes pottery cast in shape. They were produced by different manufacturers and distributed by the Design Center, in the Poltronova area directed by Sergio Cammilli in the decade 1969-1979.
